INTENT
We teach outdoor learning in our curriculum because it provides our children with invaluable opportunities to engage with the natural world, encouraging a deep sense of curiosity and respect for their environment. Through hands-on experiences, our children develop essential skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking while participating in activities that encourage physical fitness and mental well-being. outdoor learning cultivates a holistic educational experience, bridging the gap between theory and real life. By integrating outdoor learning, we not only enhance academic understanding but also promote social-emotional growth, resilience, and a lifelong appreciation for the environment, all of which are crucial in shaping Truly Great well-rounded individuals.
Our Core Values provide the platform on which we have built our curriculum offer at Barnburgh Primary Academy. Our outdoor learning curriculum is underpinned by our Core Values in the following ways;
We teach our children to show courage in outdoor learning to face fears and challenges, to encourage personal growth and resilience. Engaging in tasks like den building or fire starting builds confidence and encourages teamwork and collaboration, as children support each other through new experiences.
We teach our children that perseverance in outdoor learning lessons is vital in overcoming obstacles and challenges they encounter in nature. This resilience fosters a growth mindset, encouraging them to understand that setbacks are part of the learning process. By practicing perseverance, our children develop essential problem-solving skills and boost their confidence, equipping them to tackle future challenges both in outdoor settings and everyday life.
We teach our children to show ambition in outdoor learning lessons by setting meaningful goals for activities such as tying knots or den building projects, encouraging them to challenge themselves and strive for personal bests. By providing opportunities for self-reflection and celebrating their achievements, we foster a mindset that values perseverance and growth.
We teach children respect in outdoor learning lessons by modelling mindful, positive interactions with each other and the environment, emphasising the importance of listening and valuing diverse perspectives. Engaging them in discussions about conservation and proper etiquette in nature fosters a sense of responsibility and love for the outdoor spaces they explore.
We teach our children independence in outdoor learning lessons by encouraging them to take responsibility for their tasks, such as building a den or managing their equipment, promoting self-reliance and decision-making. Providing opportunities for problem-solving without direct intervention allows our children to build confidence in their abilities and learn from their experiences.
